If you’re planning your first trip to New Zealand, this Auckland itinerary is the perfect way to ease into the adventure. We started our trip here, coming in from Australia after just finishing our journey on The Ghan train through the Outback.
Even if you’re just beginning your New Zealand travels, Auckland is a fantastic place to recover from jet lag and start exploring. With walkable neighborhoods, vibrant waterfronts, island day trips, and buzzing food culture, Auckland offers a little bit of everything.
As you plan your Auckland itinerary, remember you likely won’t have time to see and do everything. New Zealand is filled with adventure and jaw-dropping views around every winding road. If you only have a week, I recommend sticking to one island and making the most of your time—while still leaving room to soak it in without feeling rushed.
Whether you’re stopping for a few days before road-tripping the North or South Island or planning to use Auckland as a longer home base, this 3-day itinerary highlights the best of the city for a first-time visit—with options for slow travelers, curious wanderers, and those looking to explore beyond the city limits.
Essentials & Orientation
- Visa Requirements: Most visitors need to request a request a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before arriving—even if you’re just transiting through. It’s a quick process, but don’t leave it to the last minute. U.S. travelers and many others can apply online or via app and usually get approval within a couple of days.
- Traveller Declaration: All travelers must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration within 24 hours of their trip starting. While you can do it on the plane, I think it’s easier to fill it out online ahead of time.
- Airport to City: Take the SkyDrive bus, book a private transfer, or use a rideshare option (Uber, Ola, and Zoomy are the most popular). Getting through customs is fairly simple and you’ll be on your way into the city in no time.
- Do You Need a Car? Not yet. Auckland is walkable, and ferries or tours will take you further afield. Save the rental for your post-city road trip—it’s a simple way to save money and stress. Plenty of in-city rental options make pickup and drop-off easy.
- Weather: Auckland’s weather can be a little unpredictable. While it’s pretty mild year-round, pack layers, and always bring a light rain jacket (a slight mist was always in the forecast, at least in the fall months).
- Power Plugs: Type I plug (same as Australia); bring an adapter if you’re coming from the U.S. or Europe.
Our auckland itinerary Travel Timeline
We started our eight-day New Zealand adventure with a few days in Auckland, which gave us a chance to rest and reset after exploring Sydney, Melbourne, and the Australian Outback.
We spent about two and a half days in Auckland up front, followed by a four-day road trip through the central part of the North Island. We wrapped up with one final day in Auckland before flying home. Because we traveled in April, our visit coincided with Easter and Anzac Day. The city felt quieter, with some closures and locals heading out for holiday breaks.
Altogether, we had about three full days in Auckland—a great amount for first-timers. With so many nearby islands, though, it’s the kind of place you could easily use as a base for a longer stay.
What We’d Do With More Time
There’s plenty to fill your time if you decide to linger longer in the city. If we had a fourth day in Auckland, I would’ve loved to:
- Spend more time on Waiheke Island—perhaps overnight. The beaches and wine culture were absolute highlights.
- Visit Tiritiri Matangi or Rotoroa Island for a slower-paced nature day.
- Add a coastal walk near Mission Bay or the Takapuna Beach area for a different view of the city.
- Explore more of Auckland’s neighborhoods like Ponsonby or Parnell for boutique shops and local cafes.
Short on time? Catch the highlights!
Where to Stay in Auckland
Similarly to what I recommended for a first-timer in Sydney and Melbourne, stay in the Central Business District or CBD area of the city. It will maximize the short time that you have, and like the name implies, its central location will allow easy access and walkability to everything in the city.
It did surprise me how hilly the city was, but it pales in comparison to Lisbon—so don’t be too discouraged if you’re not a fan of walking up and down inclines, everything was still very easy to get around.
Staying in the CBD provides beautiful views of the city, harbor, and nearby islands. There are plenty of restaurants, fun bars, and dessert options to choose from.
Because our Auckland itinerary included two different stays, we tried out two different hotels. Both have great locations and friendly hospitality, and I’d recommend either option for your stay.
- Avani Auckland Metropolis Residences – Fantastic view of the harbor and had a washer and dryer in the unit so we could do laundry mid-trip.
- Hotel Indigo Auckland by IHG – A Chic hotel with gorgeous design, great restaurant, really thoughtful touches, and super friendly staff.
3-Day Auckland Itinerary
Day 1: City Sights & Waterfront Wandering
Kick things off by getting oriented with Auckland’s harbor-side charm and city skyline views.
- Morning:
- Head to the Sky Tower for panoramic views.
- Walk along Viaduct Harbour and the Wynyard Quarter, or pop into the Auckland Art Gallery or Auckland Museum if you want to add culture to your morning.
- Sweet tooth? Swing by Cocoa Wilds for treats and samples of their amazing chocolates or toasted marshmallow hot chocolate.
- Afternoon:
- Join a harbor cruise for city views from the water. It’s a 90-minute ride and you’ll learn about the history of the city and nearby islands. Pro tip: sit on the right side of the boat for the best views and photo-ops.
- Continue exploring the wharf area, pop into local shops, or head over to Britomart for boutique browsing.
Day 2: Waiheke Island – Wine, Food & Coastal Charm
- Morning:
- Catch an early ferry to Waiheke Island (book ahead, especially in busy seasons).
- Pro Tip: Book a slightly later return ferry so you have time to stroll back to the wharf and soak up a little more of the relaxed island pace. We both agreed we could’ve easily stayed a week here.
- You’ll have two ferry options, Island Direct where you can reserve your spot ahead of time or Fullers which is a walk up service. For less hassle and waiting, I’d recommend using Island Direct.
- Join a small-group food and wine tour that includes vineyard tastings, brewery stops, and local olive oil sampling.
- We booked this tour and it made for the perfect afternoon. Our small crew was tons of fun, our guide was great, and the stops were wonderful!
- If wineries, distilleries, or breweries aren’t your thing—consider the Waiheke hop-on-hop-off bus to create your own adventure.
- Catch an early ferry to Waiheke Island (book ahead, especially in busy seasons).
- Afternoon:
- When your tour wraps up, tour, stay on the island a little longer and explore Oneroa Village at your own pace—think boutique shops, beach views, and a scoop of Island Gelato (try the coconut meringue and passionfruit, it was delish!).
Bonus: Extend Your Trip on Waiheke
You’ll likely fall in love with Waiheke Island and feel like you didn’t get enough time there. If relaxed island life is more your speed, consider spending 2–3 nights on the island instead of squeezing it into a day trip.
Day 3: Choose Your Own Island Adventure
If you’re not heading out on your New Zealand road trip just yet, spend your third day exploring more of Auckland’s nearby islands:
- We chose to hike Rangitoto Island, a volcanic island just a quick ferry ride from the city. The summit hike offers amazing views and unique lava field landscapes.
Other great island day trips:
- Tiritiri Matangi – A wildlife sanctuary filled with native birds and peaceful walking trails.
- Rotoroa Island – Great for history, art, and coastal walks with fewer crowds.
- Great Barrier Island – More remote and adventurous, ideal if you have a longer stay and want something extra special.
Where to Eat & Drink in Auckland
From upscale dining to quick bites and incredible desserts, Auckland’s food scene was fantastic. Here are some favorites we tried and loved:
- Gilt – Stylish, cozy, and upscale fare.
- Amano – Farm-to-table Italian with a bakery that’s worth visiting on its own.
- Ortolana – Tucked inside Britomart, this chic spot serves seasonal New Zealand fare.
- Best Ugly Bagels – Fast, casual, and perfect for breakfast on the go.
- Shucker Brothers – Casual oysters and seafood right by the ferry terminal.
- Le Chef – Charming French bistro with excellent service.
- Giapo – Inventive and Instagram-worthy ice cream.
- Island Gelato Co. – A Waiheke favorite worth returning to more than once (and it’s also available in Auckland).
Make room for this in your Auckland itinerary—it’s worth it.
Are cocktails are your thing? Then be sure to make time for Caretaker.
This hidden speakeasy came highly recommended by just about every local we met—and it absolutely lived up to the hype.
There’s no menu here. Instead, the bartender will pull up a chair, ask about your favorite flavors or go-to drinks, and craft a custom cocktail just for you.
It was such a fun and memorable experience—we tried things we wouldn’t normally order and loved the surprise of it all.
Honorable Mentions
While we didn’t have a chance to try everything ourselves, here are a few favorites that came highly recommended by locals we talked to:
- Hello Beasty
- Mekong Baby
- Bivacco
- Odette’s Eatery
- Kemuri Hi-Fi
- Panacea
- Apero
- Fort Greene
Dining Culture Tips
- Cards Only: Nearly every restaurant, café, and bar in Auckland accepts only card payments.
- Credit Card Fees: It’s common to see an additional 1.5–2% added for card transactions.
- Holiday/Weekend Surcharge: On holidays and weekends, many places add a 15–20% surcharge to offset staff pay differences.
- Pay at the Counter: In many restaurants, you’ll go to the host stand or register to pay rather than having the server bring the card reader to your table.
Day Trips from Auckland Without a Car
If your Auckland itinerary includes extra time in the city but not a rental car, don’t worry—you still have great options for exploring more of the North Island. Several day tours depart from Auckland and, while they can be long, they offer an easy and fun way to experience the countryside and unique sights beyond the city.

- Hobbiton Movie Set Tour – Book a round-trip tour that includes transport from Auckland. An Auckland travel tip: Try the early morning departure to beat the crowds.
- Waitomo Glowworm Caves – Opt for a guided coach tour that includes stops at both the caves and Rotorua for geothermal wonders.
- Piha Beach & Rainforest Walks – Join a half-day or full-day small-group tour to the West Coast beaches and Waitakere Ranges. You’ll get black sand beaches, waterfalls, and lush trails—no driving needed.

Before You Hit the Road
Do your plans after Auckland include a road trip? Here are few things to think about before you head out:
- Pick up your rental car in the city center—there’s no need to drive in Auckland before you’re heading out. Book your car in advance for better rates and availability.
- Driving Reminder: New Zealanders drive on the left side of the road—but don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it (especially after hitting the windshield wipers instead of the blinker a dozen times). There are plenty of road signs and reminders to help you adjust.
- Grab a few snacks and maybe a bottle of Waiheke wine for your next leg. Local supermarkets are convenient and well-stocked, or grab one during your wine and food tour on the island.
- Next Stops to Consider: Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Rotorua, or Hobbiton are all within 2–3 hours and offer totally different experiences from city life.
- Travel Insurance & Navigation: Always a good idea when traveling in New Zealand. Download offline maps through Google or use an app like Maps.me.
